Values

A platinum eagle’s market depends on the size, the year, and the reverse of that year. This page is a series reference, not a price list.

The mintage chart leaves G, VF, and MS-63 blank. The NGC US Coin Price Guide file retrieved 2026-08-21 does not cover these coins. A one-ounce coin is not a price by itself.

If you have one and want to sell it, start with how to sell a coin collection. The American Gold Eagle is the gold program. The American Palladium Eagle is the other platinum-group bullion coin.

Key Dates

No key list was copied onto this page. A year left off the chart is not a rare-date claim.

Errors

A shared cell. 2016 and 2017 share one one-ounce figure with no each mark. Both years stay off.

Dashes. A dash in a fractional column is not a mintage of zero. It is not a row.

Proofs and burnished coins. Those sections stay off. A proof reverse that changes every year is not a bullion row.

Compare the coin to the NGC Coin Explorer platinum eagle pages. We do not host their plates. The explorer is not the mintage source for this chart.

Varieties

The obverse portrait stays. The reverse changes with the year, and later bullion issues on this chart are the one-ounce coin. A proof reverse that changes every year is not a bullion row. This page does not list every annual theme.

Names follow PCGS CoinFacts and NGC, the same publishers this site already cites. This is a name list, not a price list and not a count.

Mintage

Bullion strikes from 1997. Four sizes through 2008. One-ounce rows where the bullion table prints a single-year cell after that.

Specifications

These are mint specs, not what a dealer pays. Wear can take a little weight off. We will not invent a tolerance. Early fractionals and the later one-ounce coin are not one thickness, and no catalog page used here prints a thickness for each size.

Grading

A platinum eagle wears on Liberty’s portrait and on that year’s reverse.

Early bullion coins come in four sizes. Later bullion rows on this chart are one ounce.

Key Diagnostic Areas

What to read on this design, and why those spots move the grade.
AreaWhat to examineWhy it matters
Liberty’s portraitThe high points of the portrait the program kept. The reverse theme changes by year. The portrait is still part of the grade.
The sizeWhether the coin is a fractional or the one-ounce piece.Fractional bullion stops after 2008 on this chart. A dash was not turned into a zero.
The reverseThe theme on the reverse, which changes by year. One photograph cannot stand for the series. Read the year.
The finishA bullion surface, or a proof or burnished finish.Proofs and burnished coins stay off. 2016 and 2017 bullion stay off because the cell is shared.

Circulated & Mint State

These cards describe this coin, not a second copy of the P-1 through MS-70 chart. The shared numbers live on the glossary.

See graded photos. The photos that show what VF looks like live at PCGS. We do not host their plates. NGC Coin Explorer is another look if you want a second set.

What each named grade looks like on this design.

Poor

Poor

A disk you can still call a platinum eagle if you already know the type.

  • Liberty’s portrait are gone.
  • The date may be a shadow. Do not scrape it.
  • Shine does not make this a better coin.

AG

About Good

You might read a digit. The high points on this platinum eagle are already slick.

  • Liberty’s portrait are worn to a blank patch.
  • If you cannot read the date without hoping, stay here.
  • A one-ounce bullion coin is still this grade if it is this worn.

Good

Good

The date is readable. The design is still mostly an outline.

  • Liberty’s portrait are flat. The type is an outline, not a portrait.
  • The rim should be full enough to hold the legend.
  • This is a worn coin, not a details story.

VG

Very Good

The date is clear. A little life returns away from the high points.

  • Some leftover detail sits away from liberty’s portrait.
  • The high points are still tired.
  • Do not clean the date to “see it better.”

Fine

Fine

You can follow the design. The high points are outlined, not sharp.

  • Liberty’s portrait are outlined and flat — no real sharpness yet.
  • The rest of the coin can look busier than the grade.
  • The date should be clear. The mint mark should be too, if there is one.

VF

Very Fine

The type is doing real work. Liberty’s portrait still decide.

  • Leftover detail sits on liberty’s portrait. The centers are still the worn spot.
  • Marks do not raise the grade.
  • A regular one-ounce bullion coin is still this grade if it is this worn.

EF

Extremely Fine

Most of the coin looks sharp. The high points tell on it.

  • Light wear on liberty’s portrait.
  • The rest of the coin can look better than the grade. Trust the high points.
  • The date should be sharp.

AU

About Uncirculated

Almost no wear — and “almost” lives on the same high points.

  • A trace of rub on liberty’s portrait.
  • Luster may still sit in the fields. Rub on those high points is still rub.
  • A bright coin with a slick high point is still slick.

Basal MS

Mint State

No wear. The fight is marks and luster, not how white the coin looks.

  • No rub on liberty’s portrait.
  • Marks and luster decide how this mint-state coin lives.
  • A bright chewed-up coin is still chewed-up.

Choice

Choice Mint State

Still no wear. Cleaner fields than basal mint state.

  • Same no-wear rule on liberty’s portrait.
  • Fewer marks in the fields. Luster is more intact.
  • White is not a grade.

Gem

Gem Mint State

A clean platinum eagle for this type. Still mint state, still not a story.

  • No wear on liberty’s portrait.
  • Marks and luster, not a romance about a date or a white field.
  • A slab is an opinion in plastic. The glossary has the numbers.

Proof platinum eagles exist. This page does not invent a PR price grid. The proof numbers live on the glossary.

Copper color designations do not apply to this platinum coin. See the Lincoln Wheat cent and the glossary.

Overview

The American Platinum Eagle began in 1997. Early bullion coins come in four sizes. Later bullion issues on this chart are the one-ounce coin, and the reverse changes with the year. Proofs are a different product.

No paired public-domain type plate was added. The placeholder is intentional. One reverse would not stand for a series whose design changes.

This page is a series article, not a shop listing.

History

The bullion table itself says no bullion platinum eagles were issued from 2009 through 2013, and none in 2015, because blanks were short. Those years are absent here because the table leaves them out.

From 2014 the bullion rows that remain are one-ounce. 2016 and 2017 are the exception that is not entered: one cell spans both years and does not say the figure applies to each year. Guessing a split would invent two mintages.

Proofs and burnished uncirculated coins have their own sections. They stay off.

Design

The obverse is a portrait of Liberty that the program has kept while the reverse tells a different theme each year. A tenth-ounce coin and a one-ounce coin are different diameters. Read the size on the holder, or the weight, before you match a coin to a row.

A proof finish is not a bullion row even when the design is the same year.

People Also Ask

Why are some years missing?

The bullion table says no bullion platinum eagles were issued in several years, and it leaves other years out. A missing year is not filled from memory.

Why are 2016 and 2017 blank?

Those two years share one one-ounce cell, and the cell is not marked as a count for each year. A shared cell is not split into two invented rows.

Where did the fractional sizes go?

Tenth-ounce, quarter-ounce, and half-ounce bullion appear through 2008. Later bullion rows on this chart are one-ounce only. Dashes are not zeros.

How much is a platinum eagle worth?

This page does not print guide prices. The NGC US Coin Price Guide file retrieved 2026-08-21 does not include this series. Platinum value moves. It is not a grade column.

Collector Considerations

Name the size and the year. After 2008, do not look for a fractional bullion row on this chart. If the year is 2016 or 2017, the bullion cell was shared and this page left it off.

The palladium eagle is a different metal and a different obverse. Do not file a winged-Liberty head under platinum.

A Final Word

The platinum eagle page charts the bullion cells that belong to one year. The shared cell stays shared, and off the chart.

The grade columns stay blank until a guide extract exists for this series.
