Values
A gold eagle’s market depends on the size, the year, and whether 2021 is Type 1 or Type 2. This page is a series reference, not a price list.
The mintage chart leaves G, VF, and MS-63 blank. The NGC US Coin Price Guide file retrieved 2026-08-21 does not cover these coins. Four sizes are not four prices.
If you have one and want to sell it, start with how to sell a coin collection. The Saint-Gaudens double eagle is the old twenty-dollar coin whose Liberty this obverse follows. The American Gold Buffalo is the other modern gold bullion coin.
Key Dates
No key list was copied onto this page. A low row is still a row. It is not a bold line until a publisher key list is checked against this chart.
Errors
2021 twice. Type 1 and Type 2 are both real. Read the mint label. Do not merge the two reverses.
Proofs and burnished coins. Those tables exist. They stay off this bullion chart. A W on a gold eagle is not a bullion row here.
The old eagle. A ten-dollar Indian or a Liberty head eagle is the circulating coin. It is not a bullion size.
Compare the coin to the NGC Coin Explorer gold eagle pages. We do not host their plates. The explorer is not the mintage source for this chart.
Varieties
Four bullion sizes share the page. In 2021 the reverse changes, and the bullion table splits that year. Proofs stay off the chart. Type 1 and Type 2 are not two grades of one coin.
- Tenth, quarter, half, and one ounceThe size is part of the label. A tenth-ounce coin is not a one-ounce coin with a weak strike.
- 2021 Type 1Miley Busiek’s family of eagles, the first reverse. The bullion table prints it on its own rows.
- 2021 Type 2The new reverse, a single eagle in a different drawing. Do not merge it with Type 1.
Names follow PCGS CoinFacts and NGC, the same publishers this site already cites. This is a name list, not a price list and not a count.
Mintage
Bullion strikes, tenth-ounce through one-ounce, from the first year through the latest year the bullion table prints. Type 1 and Type 2 in 2021 are separate rows.

Grading
A gold eagle bullion coin wears on Liberty’s knee and the breast.
Four sizes share the design. 2021 comes with two reverses. Proofs and burnished coins stay off the chart.
Key Diagnostic Areas
| Area | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Liberty’s knee and breast | The knee and the breast of the striding figure. | Those high points go first. The size of the planchet does not change them. |
| The size | Tenth-ounce, quarter-ounce, half-ounce, or one-ounce. | The chart is four columns. The wrong size is the wrong row. |
| The reverse | A family of eagles, or the later single eagle. | 2021 Type 1 and Type 2 are separate rows. They are not two grades. |
| The date | A date from 1986 forward, in ordinary numerals. | A Roman-numeral 1907 coin is the old double eagle, not this bullion series. |

See graded photos. The photos that show what VF looks like live at PCGS. We do not host their plates. NGC Coin Explorer is another look if you want a second set.
What each named grade looks like on this design.
Poor
Poor
A disk you can still call a gold eagle if you already know the type.
- Liberty’s knee and the breast are gone.
- The date may be a shadow. Do not scrape it.
- Shine does not make this a better coin.
AG
About Good
You might read a digit. The high points on this gold eagle are already slick.
- Liberty’s knee and the breast are worn to a blank patch.
- If you cannot read the date without hoping, stay here.
- A Type 2 reverse is still this grade if it is this worn.
Good
Good
The date is readable. The design is still mostly an outline.
- Liberty’s knee and the breast are flat. The type is an outline, not a portrait.
- The rim should be full enough to hold the legend.
- This is a worn coin, not a details story.
VG
Very Good
The date is clear. A little life returns away from the high points.
- Some leftover detail sits away from liberty’s knee and the breast.
- The high points are still tired.
- Do not clean the date to “see it better.”
Fine
Fine
You can follow the design. The high points are outlined, not sharp.
- Liberty’s knee and the breast are outlined and flat — no real sharpness yet.
- The rest of the coin can look busier than the grade.
- The date should be clear. The mint mark should be too, if there is one.
VF
Very Fine
The type is doing real work. Liberty’s knee and the breast still decide.
- Leftover detail sits on liberty’s knee and the breast. The centers are still the worn spot.
- Marks do not raise the grade.
- A regular Type 2 reverse is still this grade if it is this worn.
EF
Extremely Fine
Most of the coin looks sharp. The high points tell on it.
- Light wear on liberty’s knee and the breast.
- The rest of the coin can look better than the grade. Trust the high points.
- The date should be sharp.
AU
About Uncirculated
Almost no wear — and “almost” lives on the same high points.
- A trace of rub on liberty’s knee and the breast.
- Luster may still sit in the fields. Rub on those high points is still rub.
- A bright coin with a slick high point is still slick.
Basal MS
Mint State
No wear. The fight is marks and luster, not how white the coin looks.
- No rub on liberty’s knee and the breast.
- Marks and luster decide how this mint-state coin lives.
- A bright chewed-up coin is still chewed-up.
Choice
Choice Mint State
Still no wear. Cleaner fields than basal mint state.
- Same no-wear rule on liberty’s knee and the breast.
- Fewer marks in the fields. Luster is more intact.
- White is not a grade.
Gem
Gem Mint State
A clean gold eagle for this type. Still mint state, still not a story.
- No wear on liberty’s knee and the breast.
- Marks and luster, not a romance about a date or a white field.
- A slab is an opinion in plastic. The glossary has the numbers.
Proof gold eagles exist. This page does not invent a PR price grid. The proof numbers live on the glossary.
Copper color designations do not apply to this gold coin. See the Lincoln Wheat cent and the glossary.
Overview
The American Gold Eagle is the bullion gold coin that began in 1986, in four sizes. The obverse is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s striding Liberty, the same family as the old double eagle. Miley Busiek’s family of eagles was the first reverse. In 2021 the reverse changed, and the bullion table splits that year into Type 1 and Type 2.
No paired public-domain type plate was added. The placeholder is intentional. A Saint-Gaudens double eagle photograph would be the wrong coin.
This page is a series article, not a shop listing.
History
The gold eagle bullion program sells one-tenth, one-quarter, one-half, and one-ounce coins. The bullion table runs from the first year through the latest complete row it prints. It does not use an as-of snapshot.
Proofs are a second table. Burnished uncirculated coins, including the W pieces, are a third. Neither table is copied here. The circulating ten-dollar eagle ended in 1933 and stays on the eagle page.
Design
Obverse: Liberty striding with a torch and an olive branch, Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s figure, on a smaller modern planchet. Reverse: a family of eagles, Miley Busiek’s first reverse. The 2021 reverse is a single eagle in a different drawing. The size is part of the mint label: tenth, quarter, half, or one ounce.
Do not read a Roman-numeral 1907 double eagle as a bullion gold eagle. The date on this series is 1986 or later.
People Also Ask
Why does 2021 have two rows for each size?
Type 1 is the first reverse. Type 2 is the new reverse. The bullion table prints both. They are not added together.
Are the proof gold eagles on this chart?
No. The proof table and the burnished uncirculated table stay off. This page is the bullion column only.
Is this the ten-dollar Indian eagle?
No. That is the circulating eagle of 1907 through 1933. This page is the bullion program that began in 1986. The old eagle has its own page.
How much is a gold eagle worth?
This page does not print guide prices. The NGC US Coin Price Guide file retrieved 2026-08-21 does not include this series. Gold value moves. It is not a grade column.
Collector Considerations
Name the size, then the year, then the 2021 reverse if the date is 2021. Type 1 and Type 2 are not two grades of one coin.
A proof in a capsule is not a bullion row. The American Gold Buffalo is .9999 fine and uses the nickel design. This coin is the Saint-Gaudens eagle.
A Final Word
The gold eagle page is four bullion sizes and a split year in 2021. Proofs stay on the other table.
The grade columns stay blank until a guide extract exists for this series.
