Values

A mint set’s market depends on the year, the finish, and whether every coin is still in the holder. This page is a series reference, not a price list.

The mintage chart leaves G, VF, and MS-63 blank. The NGC US Coin Price Guide file retrieved 2026-08-21 does not cover these sets. Do not turn the face value printed in the source into a price.

If you have one and want to sell it, start with how to sell a coin collection. The proof set is the mirrored package. A souvenir set sold at a mint gift shop is not this chart.

Key Dates

No key list was copied onto this page. A short early row is still a row. It is not a bold line until a publisher key list is checked against this chart.

Errors

Approximate cells. The first years are written with an about sign. They stay off. So does a 1964 special-mint range.

Two 1976 rows. The annual uncirculated set and the three-coin silver set are both real. Read the mint label. Do not add them.

A cell marked to be determined. The latest unfinished line stays off. It is not a mintage.

Compare a coin from the set to the NGC Coin Explorer. We do not host their plates. Those pages are individual coins. They are not the set-sales source for this chart.

Varieties

The mint set is a package of uncirculated coins. These are the package types this page already separates. They are not die varieties of one coin, and a souvenir set from a mint gift shop is still not this chart.

  • Double mint setThe early uncirculated package, two coins from the working mints. The first years with approximate counts stay off the chart.
  • Special mint set, 1965–1967The packages made when no proof set was sold. They are labeled on this chart. A 1964 range in that table stays off.
  • 1976 three-coin silver setThe silver Bicentennial package. It is not the annual uncirculated set of that year. Both can be real. Do not add them.
  • Satin finishThe middle of the 2000s uses a satin finish. It is still the annual set, not a proof. Brilliant finish follows.

Names follow PCGS CoinFacts and NGC, the same publishers this site already cites. This is a name list, not a price list and not a count.

Mintage: the note under this table names the page that printed each count. These figures are not an NGC Coin Explorer extract and they are not the 1974 Mint pamphlet.

Collector-standard year/mint presentation follows A Guide Book of United States Coins (the Red Book). These cells are Mint manufacture figures, not a Red Book net or melt.

Values: NGC US Coin Price Guide, retrieved 2026-08-21. Guide values, not offers. Not melt. NGC IDs link to the same publisher’s price-guide listing.

Key date names: PCGS CoinFacts (2026-08-21). Bold rows are only dates that publisher named.

Package figures are the Wikipedia United States Mint Set tables, retrieved 2026-10-06. Approximate figures stay off. The unfinished cell stays off. Souvenir sets stay off. The silver row is the three-coin set, not the annual set.

The grade columns are empty because this site has no NGC guide extract for a set.

Specifications

These are mint specs, not what a dealer pays. Wear can take a little weight off a coin. We will not invent a tolerance. A mint set holds several denominations, and no catalog page used here prints one thickness for the package.

Grading

A mint set is an uncirculated package, not a proof set.

Each coin has its own obverse and reverse. Read the label. The annual set, the special mint set, and the 1976 silver set are different rows.

The finishBrilliant, satin, or the special mint finish of the mid-1960s.Satin is still the annual set. A mirror proof belongs on the proof set page.

Circulated & Mint State

These cards describe this coin, not a second copy of the P-1 through MS-70 chart. The shared numbers live on the glossary.

What each named grade looks like on this design.

Poor

Poor

A disk you can still call a mint set if you already know the type.

  • The high points of the coins in the holder are gone.
  • The date may be a shadow. Do not scrape it.
  • Shine does not make this a better coin.

AG

About Good

You might read a digit. The high points on this mint set are already slick.

  • The high points of the coins in the holder are worn to a blank patch.
  • If you cannot read the date without hoping, stay here.
  • A annual uncirculated set is still this grade if it is this worn.

Good

Good

The date is readable. The design is still mostly an outline.

  • The high points of the coins in the holder are flat. The type is an outline, not a portrait.
  • The rim should be full enough to hold the legend.
  • This is a worn coin, not a details story.

VG

Very Good

The date is clear. A little life returns away from the high points.

  • Some leftover detail sits away from the high points of the coins in the holder.
  • The high points are still tired.
  • Do not clean the date to “see it better.”

Fine

Fine

You can follow the design. The high points are outlined, not sharp.

  • The high points of the coins in the holder are outlined and flat — no real sharpness yet.
  • The rest of the coin can look busier than the grade.
  • The date should be clear. The mint mark should be too, if there is one.

VF

Very Fine

The type is doing real work. The high points of the coins in the holder still decide.

  • Leftover detail sits on the high points of the coins in the holder. The centers are still the worn spot.
  • Marks do not raise the grade.
  • A regular annual uncirculated set is still this grade if it is this worn.

EF

Extremely Fine

Most of the coin looks sharp. The high points tell on it.

  • Light wear on the high points of the coins in the holder.
  • The rest of the coin can look better than the grade. Trust the high points.
  • The date should be sharp.

AU

About Uncirculated

Almost no wear — and “almost” lives on the same high points.

  • A trace of rub on the high points of the coins in the holder.
  • Luster may still sit in the fields. Rub on those high points is still rub.
  • A bright coin with a slick high point is still slick.

Basal MS

Mint State

No wear. The fight is marks and luster, not how white the coin looks.

  • No rub on the high points of the coins in the holder.
  • Marks and luster decide how this mint-state coin lives.
  • A bright chewed-up coin is still chewed-up.

Choice

Choice Mint State

Still no wear. Cleaner fields than basal mint state.

  • Same no-wear rule on the high points of the coins in the holder.
  • Fewer marks in the fields. Luster is more intact.
  • White is not a grade.

Gem

Gem Mint State

A clean mint set for this type. Still mint state, still not a story.

  • No wear on the high points of the coins in the holder.
  • Marks and luster, not a romance about a date or a white field.
  • A slab is an opinion in plastic. The glossary has the numbers.

Proof sets are the other page. This page does not invent a PR price grid. The proof numbers live on the glossary.

Copper color designations belong on a cent, not on the package. See the Lincoln Wheat cent and the glossary.

Overview

The mint set is the Mint’s annual package of uncirculated coins from the working mints, two of each denomination in the usual years. Early sets are the double mint sets. From 1968 the package returns with mint marks. This chart also keeps the special mint sets and one silver bicentennial set, each labeled.

No paired public-domain photograph of a sealed set was added. The placeholder is intentional.

This page is a series article, not a shop listing.

History

Double mint sets begin in the late 1940s. The first three years in the table are approximate, so the chart starts with the first exact cell. The sets continue through 1964. Special mint sets replace proofs for 1965, 1966, and 1967. A 1964 line in that special table is a range, and it stays off.

No mint sets were made in 1982 or 1983. The article says so, and this chart does not invent a zero. Satin finish covers the middle of the 2000s. Brilliant finish follows. The table’s last unfinished year stays off. Souvenir sets sold at the mint buildings are a separate section and are not copied.

Design

This page is the package, not one coin. The coins are the circulating designs of the year, in uncirculated finish, and each coin has its own obverse and reverse on its series page. Philadelphia and Denver are the usual pair. Some years add San Francisco, a West Point dime, or a token where a dollar was missing. The mint label on this chart names the package: mint set, special mint set, or the silver bicentennial set.

Satin coins from the middle 2000s look softer than a brilliant coin. That finish is still the annual set, not a proof.

People Also Ask

Why are the first three years missing?

Those cells are printed as approximate counts. An approximation is not a row.

What is a special mint set?

The 1965, 1966, and 1967 packages, made when no proof set was sold. They are labeled on this chart. A 1964 range in that table stays off.

Why is there no 1982 or 1983 row?

The article says no mint sets were produced in those two years. A missing year is not a zero.

How much is a mint set worth?

This page does not print guide prices. The NGC US Coin Price Guide file retrieved 2026-08-21 does not include mint sets. An uncirculated package is not a single grade column.

Collector Considerations

Read the label before you match a 1976 package. The silver three-coin set is not the annual uncirculated set, and the annual set is not the silver set. Both rows exist.

A proof set has mirror fields. If the coins are proofs, use the proof set page. A gift-shop souvenir pack is neither row.

A Final Word

The mint set page charts exact package counts and leaves approximations, ranges, and unfinished cells off.

The grade columns stay blank until a guide extract exists for these sets.
